Net zero in 2050 – Area chart

The Net-Zero 2050 is a new initiative of the European Climate Foundation with contributions from a consortium of experts and organisations funded by the ECF.

The European Commission has made analyzes of how the EU can achieve net zero emissions in 2050. The figure shows one such scenario (1.5LIFE) with emission paths for the various sectors (real figures for 2017 and estimates thereafter). Not all sectors will be able to reach zero emissions. These remaining emissions must be offset by other measures so that net emissions go to zero. Therefore, in this scenario, there are plans for increased carbon uptake from forest / land use changes (LULUCF) and the use of technologies for removing carbon from the atmosphere (Carbon Removal Technologies). This can e.g. be bioenergy with carbon capture and storage.
